Building Orientation

Light direction is essential. The light from the south is more consistent throughout the day and year.

Windows

Windows with tall head heights bring as much light into the building as possible and reduce glare.

noun-skylight-901265
Skylights

Skylights allow daylight to enter from above, which is helpful in spaces at the center of the building where light from windows can’t reach.

Clerestories

Windows high above eye level, or clerestories, can light up an entire room and diffuse the light into the space below when combined with a ceiling material or finish.

Artifical Light

Natural light isn’t always available.  On cloudy days or shorter days in the winter, schools must supplement artificial light sources—especially those tuned to circadian rhythms that boost learning performance.
