― Returning to School: Case Study
The Wheeler School
The Wheeler School is an independent nursery–grade 12 school located in Providence, Rhode Island with an auxiliary campus (the “Farm”) in Seekonk, Massachusetts.
The school is faced with the challenge of how to safely open in the fall without compromising its unique academic program and learning environment. Further complicating matters, Wheeler had just completed a new master plan for its facilities and recently overhauled its academic schedule. The COVID-19 pandemic raises questions about how the school can work toward its long-term vision and operate on its new schedule, while also meeting new public health requirements.

The Danish School System
In Denmark, schools and other parts of society were closed in March 2020 to help stop the spread of COVID-19. As the number of cases began to stabilize, the national government began the controlled reopening of the country. This included schools serving grades 0 to 5 (comparable to kindergarten through fifth grade in the U.S.). The government provided general guidelines on reopening, and individual schools were required to follow them.
The guidance provided on this site is based on the available information as of the date of publication and does not replace federal, state, or local public health recommendations but aggregates best practices and innovative solutions at the intersection of buildings and school health. We encourage schools to reach out and seek expert advice on their unique circumstances.
